Gilded Age winter resorts

Before Florida took the trade, wealthy northerners wintered in Georgia. The Jekyll Island Club (1887) was their island retreat; Augusta’s Summerville neighborhood, home of The Partridge Inn, was a fashionable winter resort; and Americus built The Windsor Hotel in 1892 to draw northern visitors.

The Golden Isles

Two historic resorts face the sea on Georgia’s barrier islands: the Jekyll Island Club and The King and Prince on St. Simons Island, which the Navy used as a training facility and radar station during World War II. On the mainland at St. Marys, the Riverview Hotel and Spencer House Inn are near the ferry to Cumberland Island.

Mountain inns

In the North Georgia mountains: the Glen-Ella Springs Inn, a mineral-springs hotel from the 1880s near Tallulah Falls; the Stovall House Inn, an 1837 farmhouse in the Sautee Nacoochee valley; and The Hall House Hotel, the only lodging on Dahlonega’s historic square.

Haunted stays

Savannah has most of the ghost stories: The Marshall House, used as a Union hospital in 1864 and 1865, the Kehoe House and the 17Hundred90 Inn. Outside Savannah, The Partridge Inn in Augusta has a published one. We report these as stories guests and staff tell, not fact.

Context

History and architecture

Georgia’s historic lodging comes in layers. Savannah has the oldest: townhouses and cotton warehouses from the century after James Oglethorpe laid out his city of squares in 1733. The Gilded Age added winter resorts for northern visitors, from Jekyll Island to Augusta and Americus. Railroad towns built their own hotels, such as Senoia’s Hollberg Hotel, now The Veranda. And Atlanta’s early skyscrapers, from the 1906 Candler Building to the 1923 Glenn Building, have been turned into hotels in the last two decades.

Questions travelers ask

What is the oldest hotel in Georgia?

Of the inns we list, the oldest building is the 17Hundred90 Inn in Savannah, whose western section was built between 1821 and 1823 as a house. The oldest built as a hotel is The Marshall House in Savannah, opened in 1851; it calls itself the city’s oldest hotel.

What is the most haunted hotel in Georgia?

There is no official ranking. The Marshall House in Savannah, a Union hospital in 1864 and 1865, says it often appears on lists of the city’s most haunted hotels; the Kehoe House and 17Hundred90 Inn have well-known stories too. These are reported lore, not documented fact.

Are there historic hotels in Atlanta?

Yes, six that we list: The Candler Hotel (1906), The Georgian Terrace (1911), Ellis Hotel (1913), Glenn Hotel (1923), Hotel Clermont (1924) and Hotel Indigo Atlanta Midtown (1925). All are listed on the National Register of Historic Places or sit inside a listed historic district.

Where are the best historic bed and breakfasts in Georgia?

Most are in Savannah, in restored 19th-century houses such as the Kehoe House, The Gastonian and the Green Palm Inn. Outside the city, the Stovall House Inn in the Sautee Nacoochee valley is an 1837 farmhouse with five rooms.

How we chose these inns

Every place on this page is at least 50 years old, holds a credential we can check (National Register listing, a listed historic district, landmark status, or Historic Hotels of America membership), and takes bookings today. We verify each one against primary sources before it goes on the list, and last checked this list in October 2026. Read our criteria.
