The story

Newton Finney and John Eugene du Bignon organized the Jekyll Island Club as a winter hunting retreat in 1886, with members including J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer and Marshall Field. Senator Nelson Aldrich hosted the secret 1910 meeting at the club that led to the Federal Reserve, and the first transcontinental telephone call in 1915 included the club. The club closed after the 1942 season, the State of Georgia bought the island in 1947, and the complex closed entirely by 1971. It was restored and reopened as a resort hotel in the mid-1980s (1985 per Wikipedia and HHA; the resort’s own fact page says 1987).
