The story

Businesswoman Mary Marshall opened the Marshall House on Broughton Street in 1851, and her estate collected rents on it until 1914. In 1857 manager Ralph Meldrim added the 120-foot iron veranda, and in 1864-65 Union troops occupied the hotel and used it as a Union hospital. Author Joel Chandler Harris (the Uncle Remus stories) lived there during Reconstruction. The hotel closed in 1957 (shops kept the ground floor until 1998), was restored, and reopened in 1999 as ‘Savannah’s oldest hotel.’ HLC Hotels, which owned it as part of the Historic Inns of Savannah portfolio, sold it in June 2026; the hotel now carries The Indigo Road Hospitality Group’s branding.

The ghost story

Guests have reported seeing soldiers with missing limbs on the first floor, lore tied to the building's use as a Union hospital in 1864-65; the hotel itself says it often appears on lists of Savannah's most haunted hotels.
