The story
William Lee Stoddart, who also designed the Georgian Terrace, designed the 15-story Winecoff Hotel, which opened on Peachtree Street in 1913. On December 7, 1946, a fire in the hotel killed 119 people. The Georgia Baptist Convention later converted the building to senior housing. New owners began a year-long, $23 million restoration in 2006 and reopened it as the Ellis Hotel.
