The story
Designed by William Lee Stoddart in a Beaux-Arts style meant to evoke a Parisian hotel, the Georgian Terrace opened in October 1911. Enrico Caruso and the Metropolitan Opera used it as their base on Atlanta tours starting in 1913, and Arthur Murray began teaching dance in its ballroom. The ballroom hosted the 1939 Gone with the Wind gala, and guests have included F. Scott Fitzgerald, Helen Keller, Walt Disney and Presidents Harding and Coolidge. The hotel closed in the 1980s, reopened after a 1991 expansion, and was renovated again in 2000 and 2009.
