The story
The building at 601 E Bay St fills the northeastern tything block of Washington Square and dates to 1860 (MPC Historic Building Map; Wikipedia). According to Lodging Magazine it housed a livery stable, a cotton warehouse, a wholesale grocer, a tin shop and a machine shop. It is best known as Savannah’s first Coca-Cola bottling plant, which Greenline Architecture dates to 1902. In 1982 it became a hotel, the Mulberry Inn, a Holiday Inn franchise. Kimpton bought the Mulberry Inn in 2013, and after a full renovation it reopened in 2014 as the 145-room Kimpton Brice (‘Brice’ is Gaelic for ‘brick’).
