The story

Cotton trader and developer Joseph Thompson built the house in 1847 for his wife Eliza and their seven children; it was the first house on Jones Street. After Joseph died in 1855, Eliza managed his investments herself until her death in 1875. In the early 1920s her daughters sold it to a doctor who lived and practiced there, and from the 1950s a dentist did the same. Jim and Mary Widman bought it in 1977 to turn it into an inn and rebuilt the carriage house in 1978. Steve and Carol Day bought it in 1995, HLC Hotels in February 2002, and {verdigreen} hotels in 2025.

The ghost story

Guests and local storytellers report a Confederate soldier standing at an upstairs window, and a young girl in a white dress whose laughter is heard in the hallway late at night.
