The short answer

St. Augustine has the most, with 15 historic inns in a city founded in 1565. Beyond it, Key West’s Old Town has eight and Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island six. For a grand hotel, book one of the 1920s landmarks: The Biltmore in Coral Gables, The Breakers in Palm Beach, the Don CeSar on St. Pete Beach or the Vinoy in St. Petersburg.

The railroad barons’ hotels

Florida’s resort trade was built by two railroad men. Henry Flagler bought St. Augustine’s Casa Monica in 1888, founded The Breakers in Palm Beach and planned the Casa Marina for passengers of his Overseas Railway to Key West. On the Gulf coast, Henry Plant built the Hotel Belleview in 1897 to fill his trains; its core survives as the Belleview Inn.

Grand hotels of the 1920s boom

The land boom of the mid-1920s left a run of Mediterranean Revival landmarks: The Biltmore in Coral Gables, The Breakers, The Brazilian Court and The Vineta in Palm Beach, The Vinoy in St. Petersburg, the Don CeSar on St. Pete Beach, the Floridan in Tampa (now Hotel Flor), La Concha in Key West and The Colony in Delray Beach.

Key West and Amelia Island

Two island towns have enough historic inns for a trip of their own. Key West’s Old Town has eight we list, from La Concha and the Casa Marina to guest houses like the Marquesa and Marrero’s. Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island has six, including The Fairbanks House, the Williams House and the Florida House Inn.

Old Florida small towns

Away from the coasts’ big hotels: the Island Hotel in Cedar Key, a store from about 1861 that survived the Civil War; the Herlong Mansion in Micanopy; The Gibson Inn in Apalachicola; the Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora; and the 1937 lodge at Wakulla Springs.

Haunted stays

Historic Hotels of America has named both St. Augustine’s Casa Monica and the Don CeSar to its most-haunted lists. The Biltmore has its 1929 gangster story, and Key West’s La Concha, Marrero’s and The Artist House tell ghost stories of their own. We report these as stories guests and staff tell, not fact.

Context

History and architecture

Florida’s historic lodging follows its booms. St. Augustine kept houses from the Spanish colonial and territorial years that became inns much later. The railroads of Henry Flagler and Henry Plant brought the first resort hotels in the 1880s and 1890s. The land boom of the 1920s produced the Mediterranean Revival grand hotels, and Miami Beach’s hotels of the 1930s, such as the Savoy Plaza (1935) and The National (1939), came just before World War II.

Questions travelers ask

What is the oldest hotel in Florida?

Of the inns we list, the oldest building is the St. Francis Inn in St. Augustine, a house the National Register dates to 1791 to 1795 that has taken in lodgers since 1845. Fernandina Beach’s Florida House Inn dates itself to the late 1850s, though its National Register nomination puts construction after 1869.

What is the most haunted hotel in Florida?

There is no official ranking. Historic Hotels of America has named St. Augustine’s Casa Monica and the Don CeSar on St. Pete Beach to its lists of most haunted hotels, and The Biltmore in Coral Gables has a ghost story tied to a 1929 gangster shooting. These are reported stories, not documented fact.

What are the historic hotels in Key West?

We list eight in Old Town: La Concha (1926), Casa Marina Key West (1920), The Marquesa Hotel (1884), Island City House Hotel (1880), Marrero’s Guest Mansion (1890), The Artist House, Curry Mansion Inn and The Southernmost House. All are inside the Key West Historic District.

Where are the best historic bed and breakfasts in Florida?

St. Augustine has the most, in restored houses from the 1790s to 1918. Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island has several in its historic district, Key West has historic guest houses in Old Town, and there are single B&Bs worth the drive in Micanopy (Herlong Mansion) and Pensacola (Celestine B&B).

How we chose these inns

Every place on this page is at least 50 years old, holds a credential we can check (National Register listing, a listed historic district, landmark status, or Historic Hotels of America membership), and takes bookings today. We verify each one against primary sources before it goes on the list, and last checked this list in October 2026. Read our criteria.
