The story
Captain S.H. Barber, the bridge tender for Coronado Beach, built the house in 1885 as his home and rooming house; around 1910 it was raised to three stories with a new lobby and dining room beneath. Fred Tryon, formerly head chef at Flagler’s Alcazar Hotel in St. Augustine, bought it in 1936, named it the Riverview Hotel and added a large west wing. After a spell as a youth hostel and years of neglect (locals called it ‘The Gray Ghost’), fire-code violations closed it around 1980-81. John Spang of Winter Park, owner of the Park Plaza Hotel, rehabilitated it from 1984, and the Heller family has owned it since 2011.
