The story

James Haskins built the original house at 600 Fleming Street in 1884 as a single-family home; the hotel says it escaped the 1886 Key West fire by about 20 feet. It became a boarding house in the early 1900s and apartments in the 1950s. Contractors Richard Manley and Erik deBoer bought it from the Archdiocese of New York in 1987 and reopened it in February 1988 as the Marquesa Hotel and Café Marquesa. The hotel expanded into two neighboring historic buildings in 1994, then added the 1878 William Kerr House (built by the Irish-born architect William Kerr) in 2015 and the Pilot House in 2016, with a new structure opening in 2018.
