The story
Cuban-rooted cigar maker Francisco Marrero built the house in 1890 for Enriquetta Marrero, and their blended family of eight children lived there. After Francisco died on a business trip to Cuba, a first wife, Maria, from whom he had never divorced, arrived and claimed the estate, and Enriquetta and the children were put out of the house. The inn notes that what became of the family afterward is not fully documented and that Marrero descendants are alive today. The 1983 National Register inventory lists 410 Fleming Street as a contributing 2.5-story Classical Revival building.
The ghost story
The inn says guests and staff report the scent of lavender and objects moving in Suite 7 (said to be Enriquetta Marrero's bedroom), a ghostly woman in the halls, shadow figures, and a former playroom door that locks and unlocks itself. It attributes these to Enriquetta, who vowed to stay in the house after she was evicted, and calls itself Key West's most haunted hotel.
