The story
Cattleman and businessman Bernard Masters built the house between 1899 and 1904 as an L-shaped, two-story residence with two brick stucco chimneys. Masters built numerous houses in North City and on Cuna Street, and his granddaughter lived in this one for many years. Other occupants included Mrs. J.F. Guilmartin, superintendent of the Women’s Exchange, and William W. Haskell, branch manager of the Jacksonville Journal. The building was later remodeled to reflect Spanish and Colonial Revival styles, and a third level and an elevator were added.
