The story

The first Clewiston Inn, built of flammable celotex by the Southern Sugar Company in 1926, burned in under an hour on September 19, 1937. United States Sugar Corporation commissioned West Palm Beach architects L. Phillips Clarke and Edgar S. Wortman, and the new Neo-Classical Revival inn opened June 2, 1938, becoming the town’s social center. Its Everglades Lounge is lined with a wildlife mural painted in oils in the mid-1940s by J. Clinton Shepherd; the NRHP nomination calls the inn little changed since 1938. U.S. Sugar sold it in 2011 to Clewiston Hospitality LLC, which runs it as an Americas Best Value Inn.

The ghost story

Staff and owners have reported spirits; a 2009 WFLX report quoted the general manager on 'four different spirits' found by paranormal investigators, plus stories of a woman seen in a Room 118 window and a spirit in Room 255.
