The story

La Concha opened on January 22, 1926, at the corner of Duval and Fleming streets as Key West’s first luxury hotel; HHA credits developer Carl Aubuchon. The 1983 National Register nomination lists the seven-story Mediterranean Revival stucco building as a contributing resource and one of the historic district’s two large hotels. Historic Hotels of America states that Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Harry S. Truman stayed there, and that Williams finished A Streetcar Named Desire at the hotel. Formerly a Crowne Plaza, it joined Marriott’s Autograph Collection after a $35 million renovation (debut announced December 2024) and marks its centennial throughout 2026.

The ghost story

Ghost-tour lore says a busboy died in a fifth-floor elevator shaft after a 1980s New Year's Eve party; guests and staff report the elevator stopping on the fifth floor with no one aboard, an apparition pushing a cart, and cold spots. The tour company itself calls the hotel 'allegedly haunted.'
