The story
Martin Luther Hampton, an associate of Addison Mizner, designed the twin-domed hotel, built in 1926 for investors led by Albert T. Repp and first named the Alterep Hotel. After it went into receivership, newlyweds George and Agnes Boughton bought it in 1935 with George’s father and renamed it the Colony; the family still runs it. For decades it opened only for the winter season, while the Boughtons ran a sister Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine. In 1949 the family added the oceanfront Colony Cabaña Club two miles away. The 1926 staff-operated elevator, original telephone switchboard and lobby wicker furniture remain in use.
