The story

Henry Flagler conceived the Casa Marina for wealthy passengers of his Overseas Railway, but he died in 1913; construction began in 1918 under Flagler associate Louis P. Schutt and the resort opened on New Year’s Eve 1920. The hotel says President Warren G. Harding visited three days after the opening. The U.S. Navy took the property by eminent domain in 1942 and used it as officers’ quarters until 1946, and the military occupied it again during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Guest-room wings were added along Seminole Street in 1976-79 and a Reynolds Street suites building in 1984. After a renovation of nearly $80 million, it welcomed guests again on October 6, 2023, as part of Hilton’s Curio Collection.
