The story
The complex began in 1883 as the Alexander House, a small two-story hotel to which a large addition was made in 1903; frame buildings followed in 1908 and 1914. In the 1920s a corporation formed by architect Frederick W. Wentworth and Archie Harlburt with more than a hundred local stockholders remodeled the main building and added the stuccoed Gables (1926) and Terrace (1929) annexes and a swimming pool. Former President Calvin Coolidge officially opened the Terrace annex on January 15, 1930, and he and Grace Coolidge stayed about a month. The 1981 film Honky Tonk Freeway was shot here, and Jim and Alexandra Gunderson bought the inn in January 2011 and began a restoration.
