The short answer

New York City has the most, with 23 historic hotels, led by The Plaza, opened on Central Park in 1907, and the Waldorf Astoria, which reopened in July 2025. Saratoga Springs has six, from The Adelphi, opened on Broadway in 1877, to two B&Bs on Union Avenue. In the Hudson Valley, book the 1766 Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck or Mohonk Mountain House, run by the Smiley family since 1869. For a lake resort, stay at The Otesaga, built on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown in 1909, or The Sagamore on Lake George; in Buffalo, The Richardson Hotel fills H. H. Richardson’s Buffalo State Asylum. On Long Island, try The 1770 House in East Hampton or Oheka Castle, Otto Kahn’s 1919 country house in Huntington.

Manhattan’s Gilded Age and Jazz Age grand hotels

Fifth Avenue’s grand hotels went up in the first years of the 1900s: John Jacob Astor IV’s St. Regis (1904), the Gotham, now The Peninsula, built in 1902–05, and Henry J. Hardenbergh’s Plaza, opened in 1907 facing Central Park. Writers and actors gathered at The Algonquin, opened in 1902, where the Round Table lunched after World War I. In the 1920s, ‘Terminal City’ grew up around Grand Central, with the Berkshire and the Barclay both opening in 1926, and Schultze & Weaver’s Waldorf-Astoria followed in 1931. Closed in 2017, the Waldorf reopened in July 2025 with 375 rooms. Downtown, the Hotel Chelsea, a cooperative apartment house of 1883–85, was home to writers and artists from Thomas Wolfe to Dylan Thomas.

Hudson Valley inns and Mohonk

In Rhinebeck, the Beekman Arms was built in 1766 beside William Traphagen’s 1704 tavern. The inn calls itself America’s oldest continuously operated hotel; Historic Hotels of America says only that it is believed to be the oldest continuously running inn. Franklin D. Roosevelt closed his campaigns with talks from its porch. In Stone Ridge, Hasbrouck House is a Dutch Colonial stone mansion of 1757 on 55 acres, and in Amenia, Troutbeck’s c. 1919 manor house stands on a 250-acre estate. On the Shawangunk Ridge, Albert Smiley bought the Stokes Tavern on Lake Mohonk in 1869, and six generations of Smileys have run Mohonk Mountain House, a National Historic Landmark. In the Hudson Highlands, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission opened Bear Mountain Inn in 1915, and at West Point The Thayer Hotel opened inside the academy’s gates in 1926.

Saratoga Springs and the Adirondacks

Saratoga Springs has six historic stays. The Adelphi Hotel (1877) and Saratoga Arms (1870) are downtown on Broadway, and Union Gables Inn (1901) and The Brunswick (1886) are B&Bs on Union Avenue, the street that runs out to the race course. The Batcheller Mansion Inn (1873), by Congress Park, is for adults only, and New York State opened The Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Spa State Park in 1935 for visitors taking the mineral-water cure. On Lake George, The Sagamore first opened on Green Island in 1883; the present Colonial Revival hotel dates from 1923. Glens Falls has The Queensbury Hotel, opened in 1926, and Saranac Lake has the 1927 Hotel Saranac, on Historic Hotels of America’s Most Haunted lists from 2024 to 2026.

Buffalo, the Finger Lakes and central New York

Buffalo has three historic hotels. The Richardson Hotel fills H. H. Richardson’s Buffalo State Asylum, a National Historic Landmark on grounds Frederick Law Olmsted designed, whose first buildings were complete by 1880. The Hotel Lafayette, designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, opened on Lafayette Square in 1904, and The Lenox opened in Allentown in 1896. Rochester’s 1929 University Club is now The Inn on Broadway, and the Hotel Syracuse, financed by local shareholders and opened in 1924, reopened as Marriott Syracuse Downtown in 2016. On Seneca Lake in Geneva, choose between Belhurst Castle, begun in 1885, and Geneva On The Lake, a 1910–14 villa modeled on one at Frascati. In Cooperstown, the Clark family opened The Otesaga on Otsego Lake in 1909.

Context

History and architecture

New York ratified the Constitution at Poughkeepsie on July 26, 1788, by a vote of 30 to 27, becoming the 11th state. The oldest buildings on our list are colonial: Hasbrouck House’s 1757 stone mansion in Stone Ridge, the 1766 Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck and The 1770 House in East Hampton. Sag Harbor’s American Hotel building dates from 1846, the peak of the town’s whaling trade, and the 19th century brought hotels for vacationers: Mohonk on its mountain lake (1869), The Adelphi in Saratoga Springs (1877) and The Sagamore on Lake George (1883). Manhattan’s landmark hotels followed, from The Algonquin (1902) and The Plaza (1907) to the Waldorf-Astoria (1931). Upstate, local backers built hotels for their own cities in the 1920s: the Hotel Syracuse, financed by local shareholders, opened in 1924, and the Glens Falls Hotel Corporation opened The Queensbury in 1926.

Questions travelers ask

What is the oldest hotel in New York?

Of the inns we list, the Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck has the earliest start: it was built in 1766 beside a 1704 tavern. The inn calls itself America’s oldest continuously operated hotel; Historic Hotels of America says only that it is believed to be the oldest continuously running inn. The oldest building is Hasbrouck House in Stone Ridge, a 1757 Dutch Colonial stone mansion that is now a hotel. In New York City, Martinique New York on Broadway opened first, in 1898.

What is the most haunted hotel in New York?

There is no official ranking. Historic Hotels of America’s Most Haunted lists have featured Hotel Saranac in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and the Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck and The Algonquin in Manhattan in 2025. At Hotel Saranac, believers say a man in a top hat who roams the halls is a former superintendent of the school that stood on the site; at the Beekman Arms, guests tell of footsteps and whispers in Rooms 21 and 22. These are stories guests and staff tell, not documented fact.

Where are the historic hotels in Saratoga Springs?

We list six: The Adelphi Hotel (1877) and Saratoga Arms (1870) downtown on Broadway; two B&Bs on Union Avenue, Union Gables Inn (1901) and The Brunswick at Saratoga (1886); the adults-only Batcheller Mansion Inn (1873) by Congress Park; and The Gideon Putnam (1935) in Saratoga Spa State Park.

Are there historic inns on Long Island?

Yes, three we list. In East Hampton, The 1770 House is Matthias Burnett’s 1770 house on Main Street, now a restaurant and inn, and in Sag Harbor, The American Hotel fills an 1846 building from the whaling era that took its name in 1876. On the North Shore, Oheka Castle in Huntington is financier Otto Kahn’s 1919 country house, with 34 guest rooms. Montauk Manor isn’t listed because it takes stays by request form, not online booking.

Where are the best historic bed and breakfasts in New York?

Most of the state’s historic stays are hotels and inns. For a B&B, go to Saratoga Springs: Union Gables Inn, a 1901 Queen Anne mansion with an outdoor pool, serves a made-to-order breakfast, and The Brunswick at Saratoga serves a full breakfast in an 1886 Gothic Victorian house. The Chestnut Inn on Oquaga Lake, a 1928 lakeside hotel with 17 rooms, calls itself a bed and breakfast.

How we chose these inns

Every place on this page is at least 50 years old, holds a credential we can check (National Register listing, a listed historic district, landmark status, or Historic Hotels of America membership), and takes bookings today. We verify each one against primary sources before it goes on the list, and last checked this list in October 2026. Read our criteria.
