The story
John Jacob Astor IV built the St. Regis as a luxury hotel on Fifth Avenue, and it opened in 1904. The Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that the hotel’s completion, along with others, marked Fifth Avenue’s shift from an exclusive residential street to a commercial one. A major expansion by Sloan & Robertson followed in 1927, repeating the original base, shaft and capital composition in 1920s terms.
