The story
Judge George Sherman Batcheller built the mansion in 1873 and named it Kaser-el-Nouzha (‘palace of pleasure’); President Grant, a guest at the house, appointed him judge and American representative on the Court of First Instance in Cairo, where he served for ten years. The family sold it in 1916, and it stood vacant and vandalized until the city condemned it in November 1973. It has since been restored as an inn.
The ghost story
Saratoga Living calls the 1873 mansion a haunted hotel, with guests reporting supernatural activity such as unexplained puffs of air and objects moving on their own.
