The story

Financier Otto Hermann Kahn of Kuhn, Loeb & Co. bought about 440 acres at Cold Spring Harbor in 1915 after fire destroyed his New Jersey estate, and hired Delano & Aldrich to build an entirely fireproof steel-and-concrete house. Named with an acronym of his name, the 109,000-square-foot house had 127 rooms and was the second-largest private home in the country, with a staff of about 126 and a formal garden and golf course. It cost the Kahns about $11 million. It now operates as a hotel and event venue with 34 guest rooms and suites.
