The story
The site at Wall and Water streets held the Tontine Coffee House of the 1790s, where brokers traded before the forerunner of the New York Stock Exchange moved elsewhere on Wall Street. Developer William K. Aston hired Clinton & Russell in 1901 to replace a later building with the 13-story Tontine Building, finished in 1902 for insurance and financial firms. Allan Gerdau bought the building in 1937 and ran the import-export firm Otto Gerdau & Co. from it. It now houses a hotel with Michelin-starred chef John Fraser’s La Marchande.
