The story
The Barclay Park Corporation, led by architect Eliot Cross and William Seward Webb Jr., built the 14-story apartment hotel on New York Central Railroad land in ‘Terminal City’ and opened it in 1926. Ernest Hemingway finished For Whom the Bell Tolls there after returning from Spain in 1940. InterContinental took it over in 1978, and IHG spent $180 million restoring it from 2014; the hotel marks its centennial in 2026.
