The story
William McCaffrey, a former Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad conductor, inherited the Old Adelphi Hotel through his wife Anna Perry and opened the new, larger Victorian Adelphi in 1877. One of its first guests was boxer, congressman and Saratoga racecourse founder John Morrissey. George Farnham, owner of the neighboring American Hotel, bought it in 1898 and ran both until his death in 1922.
The ghost story
Lore holds that John Morrissey, the boxer and race-course founder who died at the hotel in 1878, still lingers: a Haunted Saratoga ghost-tour guide points to the second-floor room where he died, and guests report feeling a presence in their rooms when the lights are out.
