The story
The Palisades Interstate Park Commission built the inn to draw visitors to Bear Mountain State Park, which opened in 1913, and Governor Charles S. Whitman presided at its invitation-only opening on June 26, 1915. Tooker & Marsh’s lodge, framed and sided with chestnut timber on a foundation of stone from colonial boundary walls, is one of the earliest examples of the rustic style later used across national and state parks. Visitors came by steamship, train and car, and Harry James and Tommy Dorsey brought their bands here.
