The story

The Park Avenue Waldorf-Astoria opened in 1931, successor to the original Waldorf and Astoria hotels on Fifth Avenue, combining a hotel and a separate residential tower in a 625-foot skyscraper that was among the city’s tallest. Anbang closed it in 2017 for a renovation that turned the upper floors into condominiums; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill led the restoration. It reopened in July 2025 with 375 hotel rooms, down from about 1,400. IBM introduced its first personal computer at a press conference in the Grand Ballroom on August 12, 1981.
