The story
A private firm built the Hotel Thayer on the academy campus in 1925-26 to house cadets’ families, dignitaries and tourists, succeeding the West Point Hotel that stood at Trophy Point from 1820 to 1932. Caughey & Evans designed it in Tudor Gothic granite and brick, with George B. Post & Sons consulting. The federal government bought it in 1943, making it the only hotel owned and operated by the federal government (per HABS), and it received the 52 Americans freed from captivity in Iran in January 1981.
