The story
Local shareholders financed the Hotel Syracuse as a community hotel, and George B. Post & Sons designed it as three towers on a shared base with more than 600 guest rooms; it opened in August 1924 and was the city’s largest and most prestigious hotel for nearly 90 years. In 1948 Syracuse University professor Carl Roters painted a 40-foot mural of 20 events in the city’s first century, later hidden behind mirrors in the 1980s. The building was fully restored and reopened as Marriott Syracuse Downtown in 2016.
