The story
The hotel is named for Gideon Putnam, who opened Saratoga’s first hotel, the 70-room Putnam Tavern and Boarding House, in 1802. New York State built the Gideon Putnam in its new spa reservation and opened it in 1935 with 87 rooms for visitors taking the mineral-water cure, with Albany architect Marcus T. Reynolds among its designers, murals by James Reynolds and interiors by Dorothy Draper. It now has 123 rooms, with the Roosevelt Baths & Spa nearby in Saratoga Spa State Park.
