The story
Hotelier Myron O. Brown and four Philadelphia millionaires formed the Green Island Improvement Company, bought Green Island for $30,000 and opened The Sagamore in July 1883, naming it for the ‘respected chief’ of Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans. After a structural accident it was rebuilt by the Wilson Brothers and reopened in 1894. A second calamity in 1914 left it closed for a decade until architect Robert Rheinlander’s Colonial Revival rebuilding opened in 1923; manager Karl P. Abbott’s expansion, financed with help from William H. Bixby, debuted in 1930.
