The story

Warren & Wetmore, architects of Grand Central Terminal, built the Berkshire in 1926 as part of the ‘Terminal City’ development around the station, with unusually large rooms that drew long-term residents. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein wrote Oklahoma! in suite 2100 in 1942, now the Rodgers & Hammerstein Suite. Dunfey bought it in 1978 and Omni completed a $70 million restoration in 1995. Omni closed it during the 2020 pandemic and announced a permanent closure, then reopened it on November 1, 2021.
