The story
Samuel Retzer bought the Knapp family’s lakeside ‘Monoquaga’ property in the 1920s and built the Hotel Monoquaga in 1927-28, with a 100-foot porch, a large fireplace and American chestnut woodwork. The Retzers ran it for decades until it closed in 1989. Bill and David Maines bought and renovated it in the early 1990s as The Chestnut Inn, and Settlers Hospitality bought and restored it in 2023.
