Historic Hotels & Inns in Pennsylvania
From Independence Hall and the Gettysburg battlefield to Pittsburgh’s industrial-era landmarks, the mountain resorts and the old inns of Bucks and Lancaster counties: every historic hotel and inn in the state we could verify.
The short answer
Philadelphia has the most, from the Morris House, a 1786–87 house in Society Hill, to The Bellevue, opened on Broad Street in 1904. In Gettysburg, stay at the Farnsworth House Inn, whose garret the inn says Confederate sharpshooters held in July 1863, or the Lightner Farmhouse, a Union hospital during the battle. In Pittsburgh, book the Omni William Penn, Henry Clay Frick’s 1916 hotel. For a resort, book Omni Bedford Springs, whose oldest building, the Stone House, dates to 1806, or The Hotel Hershey, opened in 1933. In Bucks County, the Logan Inn in New Hope opened as the Ferry Tavern in 1727.

Gettysburg’s battlefield-era inns
The town of Gettysburg lies inside the Gettysburg Battlefield Historic District, and some of its inns stood through the battle of July 1863. The Farnsworth House Inn’s stone section dates to 1810 and is named for Brig. Gen. Elon J. Farnsworth, killed leading a cavalry charge on July 3. The inn says Confederate sharpshooters held its garret, that one of them is believed to have fired the shot that killed Jennie Wade, the battle’s only civilian casualty, and that more than 100 bullet holes still mark its south wall. Southeast of town, the 1862 Lightner Farmhouse served as a hospital for wounded Union soldiers. On Baltimore Street, the Brickhouse Inn pairs an 1898 Victorian with the Civil War–era Welty House, and west of Lincoln Square the Federal Pointe Inn fills the 1896 Meade School.
Pittsburgh’s industrial-era landmarks
Henry Clay Frick built the William Penn during World War I to rival Europe’s grand hotels; it opened in 1916, and a 1929 annex enlarged it. Downtown office buildings became hotels too: Kimpton Monaco fills the 1903 James H. Reed Building, and The Industrialist the 18-story Arrott Building of 1902, a hotel since 2021. On the North Side, The Priory was built in 1888 for the Benedictine monks of St. Mary’s Church, and in Shadyside, Mansions on Fifth occupies the 1906 Tudor Revival mansion of Willis F. McCook, Frick’s attorney, on Fifth Avenue’s ‘Millionaire’s Row.’
Springs, mountain and lake resorts
Bedford Springs grew up around mineral springs: Dr. John Anderson opened bathing facilities after buying the land in 1796, the Stone House of 1806 is the resort’s oldest building, and Historic Hotels of America says James Buchanan visited more often than any other president. Milton S. Hershey built The Hotel Hershey on Pat’s Hill during the Depression to keep local tradesmen working; it opened in 1933. In the Poconos, Skytop Lodge opened in 1928 on about 2,500 acres with grounds by the Olmsted Brothers, and around Lake Wallenpaupack, Silver Birches and The Settlers Inn served visitors to the lake created in the 1920s. Eagles Mere Inn began in 1887 as the Hotel Lewis, a boarding house that outlasted its lake town’s grand hotels, and in the Laurel Highlands, The Lodge at Nemacolin is a 1968 Tudor Revival lodge.
Bucks and Lancaster counties
In New Hope, the Logan Inn says its original building dates to about 1722 and that it opened as the Ferry Tavern in 1727, serving the Delaware River crossing between Philadelphia and New York. The Doylestown Inn has filled an 1871 building in the Bucks County seat since 1902. In Lancaster County, The Limestone Inn in Strasburg is a 1786 merchant’s house that held the town’s first post office from 1805, and the Inn at Leola Village began with an 1867 tobacco-farm farmhouse. In Lancaster itself, the Lancaster Arts Hotel fills Arnold Falk’s 1881 tobacco warehouse and the Cork Factory Hotel a wing of the old cork works that Armstrong bought in 1895.

Context
History and architecture
Pennsylvania’s ratifying convention met in Independence Hall and approved the Constitution on December 12, 1787, making it the second state after Delaware. Its oldest inn on our list, the Logan Inn in New Hope, opened as the Ferry Tavern in 1727; Philadelphia’s Morris House (1786–87) and Strasburg’s Limestone Inn (1786) date from just after the Revolution. By 1809 three buildings at Bedford Springs offered lodging to visitors to its mineral springs. During the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, the Farnsworth House and the Lightner farm served as hospitals. Grand hotels rose in the cities, Philadelphia’s Bellevue-Stratford in 1904 and Pittsburgh’s William Penn, built by Henry Clay Frick, in 1916, and many later inns fill the buildings of industry and commerce: Lancaster’s tobacco warehouses and cork works, Pittsburgh’s 1902 Arrott Building and Philadelphia’s 1932 PSFS bank tower. In the Depression, Milton S. Hershey built The Hotel Hershey, which opened in 1933, to keep local tradesmen employed.
Questions travelers ask
What is the oldest hotel in Pennsylvania?
Of the inns we list, the Logan Inn in New Hope has the earliest start: the inn says its original building dates to about 1722 and that it opened as the Ferry Tavern in 1727, and it bills itself as one of America’s longest continuously running inns. The oldest buildings we list in Philadelphia and Lancaster County, the Morris House (1786–87) and The Limestone Inn in Strasburg (1786), were both built as houses. The oldest building at Omni Bedford Springs, the Stone House, dates to 1806.
What is the most haunted hotel in Pennsylvania?
There is no official ranking. Historic Hotels of America’s most-haunted lists have featured Omni Bedford Springs, The Sayre Mansion in Bethlehem and The George Washington Hotel in Washington, and HHA also relays ghost stories at Historic Hotel Bethlehem. In Gettysburg, the Farnsworth House Inn tells its own, with a room named for ‘Jeremy,’ a child spirit said to live in the house, and Visit Philadelphia’s roundup includes the Logan Inn in New Hope. These are stories guests and staff tell, not documented fact.
Where should you stay in Gettysburg?
In town, on Baltimore Street south of Lincoln Square, stay at the Farnsworth House Inn, in an 1810 house that the inn says Confederate sharpshooters used in 1863, or the Brickhouse Inn, an 1898 Victorian paired with the Civil War–era Welty House. West of the square, the Federal Pointe Inn has 22 suites in the 1896 Meade School. For a farm stay, the Lightner Farmhouse is an 1862 house on 18 acres, two miles from Gettysburg National Military Park, that served as a Union hospital in July 1863. The Gettysburg Hotel on Lincoln Square isn’t on our list: it was rebuilt after a 1983 fire.
Are there historic hotels in Pittsburgh?
Yes. Downtown, the Omni William Penn, Henry Clay Frick’s 1916 hotel, is individually listed on the National Register; Kimpton Monaco fills the 1903 James H. Reed Building, and The Industrialist the 1902 Arrott Building. On the North Side, The Priory, a hotel since 1986, was built in 1888 for Benedictine monks, and in Shadyside, Mansions on Fifth has 22 rooms in a 1906 Fifth Avenue mansion and the house next door.
Where are the best historic bed and breakfasts in Pennsylvania?
Gettysburg has the most: the Farnsworth House Inn (12 rooms, breakfast included), the Brickhouse Inn and the six-room Lightner Farmhouse, which serves a homemade breakfast. In Lancaster County, The Limestone Inn in Strasburg has six rooms in a 1786 house, and in Erie, Spencer House is an 1876 mansion on West Sixth Street. For an inn in a historic mansion, The Sayre Mansion in Bethlehem is an 1858 Gothic Revival mansion built for railroad leader Robert H. Sayre.
How we chose these inns
Every place on this page is at least 50 years old, holds a credential we can check (National Register listing, a listed historic district, landmark status, or Historic Hotels of America membership), and takes bookings today. We verify each one against primary sources before it goes on the list, and last checked this list in October 2026. Read our criteria.
