The story
Milton S. Hershey built the hotel on Pat’s Hill during the Depression as part of his ‘Great Building Campaign’ to keep local tradesmen employed, telling the town in 1930 that he would rather pay builders than feed them. Architect D. Paul Witmer drew on a small Mediterranean inn Hershey and his late wife Kitty had enjoyed, blending Spanish and colonial South American motifs. The Hotel Hershey opened on May 26, 1933 with a gala for more than 400 guests, and Hershey added the Castilian Room in 1935 and a formal rose garden in 1936.
