The story
St. Mary’s Priory was built in 1888 to house Benedictine monks and priests serving the adjacent St. Mary’s Church (1854), the first Catholic parish in what was then Allegheny City. In the 1970s the state bought the church and priory for the planned I-279, and the parish closed in 1981. Edward and Mary Ann Graf bought both buildings at a PennDOT auction in 1984 and opened The Priory as a hotel in November 1986. A new wing opened on December 31, 2010, bringing it to 42 rooms.
