The story

The hotel stands on the site of Wellsboro’s first tavern, the United States House (1816). After that building burned, Albert P. Cone built the Penn Wells Hotel, which passed through several owners and names. William Coles rebuilt it after a structural calamity in 1906, and when it closed in 1925, 60 local business leaders formed the Wellsboro Hotel Company to revive it, reopening with 55 rooms. HHA says Joan Crawford stayed in 1943 while visiting the Pine Creek Gorge.
