The story
Dr. John Anderson bought 2,200 acres around the mineral springs in 1796 and opened bathing facilities, and by 1809 three buildings offered lodging, the greatest being the Stone House. HHA says an aging Thomas Jefferson was among the first guests in 1819. President James Buchanan visited more often than any other president, and HHA says he received the first transatlantic telegraph message, from Queen Victoria in 1858, while at the resort. The Anderson family added the Colonial Building in 1829 and kept building for six decades.
The ghost story
Historic Hotels of America's 2026 Most Haunted list reports guests and staff seeing children in the Historic Wing and Frontier Tavern, Victorian- and Edwardian-dressed figures at the historic indoor pool, and knocks and a butler-like figure in the Buchanan Conference Room.
