The story
After World War I, York’s Chamber of Commerce and civic clubs ran a one-week stock drive in which nearly 1,200 residents invested more than $1.17 million in a ‘community hotel.’ The Yorktowne opened in 1925 and became the region’s social crossroads, hosting Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Lucille Ball, and was expanded in 1957. It later went into foreclosure and onto a statewide list of at-risk buildings before the York County Industrial Development Authority assembled state grants, historic tax credits and gifts for a full rehabilitation and a Tapestry Collection by Hilton affiliation.
