The story
The estate of banker and philanthropist Stephen Girard commissioned the Lafayette Building in 1907, naming it for the Marquis de Lafayette. John T. Windrim designed the 11-story office building in a classical revival style with Beaux-Arts elements. A historic-tax-credit rehabilitation turned the vacant offices into a Kimpton hotel in 2012, keeping the original rooftop pavilions as part of the rooftop bar. It stands across Chestnut Street from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
