The short answer

Baltimore has the most of any town, with six historic hotels in Fells Point, downtown and Mount Vernon, from the 1928 Lord Baltimore to Pendry Baltimore in the city’s 1914 Recreation Pier. In Annapolis, book the Historic Inns of Annapolis, whose Maryland Inn dates from 1772, or The Annapolis Inn, a 1770s townhouse with three rooms. The Eastern Shore has the most of any region, spread across small towns: Chestertown’s White Swan Tavern, whose front Joseph Nicholson built after buying the lot in 1733, three inns in St. Michaels and the Inn at the Canal in Chesapeake City. Inland, Antrim 1844 is a Greek Revival mansion in Taneytown; in Western Maryland, Inn BoonsBoro fills a 1790s stone hotel, and the Jacob Rohrbach Inn in Sharpsburg is near Antietam National Battlefield.

Themes in Maryland

Baltimore, from Fells Point to Mount Vernon

Baltimore’s historic hotels include a pier, a warehouse, a railroad headquarters and a YMCA. In Fells Point, Pendry Baltimore occupies the city’s 1914 Recreation Pier, which stood in as police headquarters in TV’s Homicide; the Inn at Henderson’s Wharf fills the B&O Railroad’s 1897 tobacco warehouse; and The William Fell spreads across seven joined buildings, the oldest from the 18th century. Downtown, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco took over the B&O’s 1906 headquarters, built after the Great Baltimore Fire, and the 22-story Lord Baltimore Hotel opened in 1928. In Mount Vernon, Hotel Indigo fills the 1907 Central YMCA.

Colonial Annapolis

All three Annapolis stays are inside the Colonial Annapolis Historic District, a National Historic Landmark district. The Historic Inns of Annapolis group Thomas Hyde’s 1772 Maryland Inn on Church Circle, where delegates to the 1783-1784 Congress stayed, with the Robert Johnson House and the Governor Calvert House on State Circle. The Annapolis Inn is Thomas Rutland’s 1770s Georgian townhouse, later the home of Dr. James Murray, and the Flag House Inn, built in 1879 by Welsh shipbuilder Richard Owen Williams, stands beside the Naval Academy’s Gate 1.

Chesapeake towns of the Eastern Shore

St. Michaels has three, all on Talbot Street: the Parsonage Inn, brickyard owner Henry Clay Dodson’s 1883 house; The Wildset Hotel, four 19th-century buildings that were the Five Gables Inn; and the Old Brick Inn of about 1816. In Chestertown, the White Swan Tavern was a tavern from 1803 to 1853, and Brampton 1860 is a manor house on 35 acres just outside town. Easton has the Bishop’s House, a Victorian the inn dates to 1880, and The Oaks Waterfront Hotel sits at Royal Oak between Easton and St. Michaels. In Berlin, the Atlantic Hotel has stood on Main Street since about 1895, and in Chesapeake City the Inn at the Canal fills Henry Brady’s 1870 house.

Civil War and National Road country

In Frederick, the Visitation Hotel fills the Visitation Academy, founded in 1846, which served as a hospital for wounded Union soldiers after the Battle of Antietam in 1862. In Sharpsburg, near Antietam National Battlefield, the Jacob Rohrbach Inn has five rooms in a house the inn dates to 1804, and in Boonsboro, Inn BoonsBoro fills Peter Conn’s 1790s stone hotel, The Eagle. Farther west, Solomon Sterner built The Casselman in Grantsville about 1842 for travelers on the National Road, now US 40; it was listed on the National Register in 1976 as one of eleven Maryland inns on the road.

Context

History and architecture

Maryland’s oldest inns stand in its colonial towns. In Chestertown, Joseph Nicholson built the front of the White Swan Tavern after buying its lot in 1733, and it served as a tavern from 1803 to 1853; in Annapolis, Thomas Hyde built the Maryland Inn in 1772 and advertised it in 1782 as ‘one of the first houses in the state for a house of entertainment.’ Inland, Peter Conn built The Eagle hotel in Boonsboro in the 1790s, and Solomon Sterner built The Casselman in Grantsville about 1842 for travelers on the National Road. Col. Andrew Ege began Antrim in Taneytown in 1844 and ran the estate as a slave plantation, and in Frederick the Visitation Academy, founded in 1846, served as a hospital for Union wounded after Antietam. In Baltimore, the B&O Railroad finished its new headquarters in 1906 after the Great Baltimore Fire, the city opened the Recreation Pier in Fells Point in 1914, and the 22-story Lord Baltimore Hotel opened in 1928.

Questions travelers ask

What is the oldest hotel in Maryland?

There’s no single answer. The earliest date on our list belongs to Chestertown’s White Swan Tavern: Joseph Nicholson built its front after buying the lot in 1733, and shoemaker John Lovegrove’s earlier one-room house there survives as a guest room. In Annapolis, Thomas Hyde built the Maryland Inn, now one of the Historic Inns of Annapolis, in 1772 and advertised it in 1782 as a house of entertainment; its sister Governor Calvert House dates to 1727 but was rebuilt in 1765. Inn BoonsBoro’s stone building went up in the 1790s as The Eagle hotel.

What is the most haunted hotel in Maryland?

There’s no official ranking. Historic Hotels of America named the Historic Inns of Annapolis to its Top 25 Most Haunted Historic Hotels list in 2023, 2024 and 2025. In Baltimore, the Lord Baltimore Hotel bills itself as haunted and runs ghost tours, and staff told The Baltimore Banner about Molly, a girl with a red ball said to roam the 19th floor; Ghost City Tours tells of phantom sailors and a Lady in White at the former Admiral Fell Inn, now The William Fell. These are stories guests and staff tell, not documented fact.

Where should I stay on the Eastern Shore?

St. Michaels has the most, with three on Talbot Street in its historic district: the Parsonage Inn, The Wildset Hotel and the Old Brick Inn. Chestertown has the six-room White Swan Tavern on High Street and Brampton 1860, a manor house with cottages on 35 acres just outside town. For the water, The Oaks Waterfront Hotel sits at Royal Oak between Easton and St. Michaels; farther afield are Berlin’s Atlantic Hotel of about 1895 and Chesapeake City’s Inn at the Canal.

Are there historic inns near Antietam?

Yes. The Jacob Rohrbach Inn is in Sharpsburg’s historic district near Antietam National Battlefield, with five rooms, including the Clara Barton Suite, in a house the inn dates to 1804. In Boonsboro, Inn BoonsBoro has eight rooms in Peter Conn’s 1790s stone hotel, and in Frederick the Visitation Hotel fills the academy that served as a hospital for wounded Union soldiers after the battle.

Where are the best historic bed and breakfasts in Maryland?

In Annapolis, The Annapolis Inn has three rooms, each on its own floor, in a 1770s Georgian townhouse a block from City Dock. On the Eastern Shore, try the Inn at the Canal in Chesapeake City, Henry Brady’s 1870 house and Cecil County’s first B&B, or the Bishop’s House in Easton, with four rooms. None of Baltimore’s six historic stays is a B&B.
