The story
Merchant Thomas Hyde leased a lot on Church Circle in 1772 and built the front part of the Maryland Inn, advertising it in 1782 as ‘one of the first houses in the state for a house of entertainment.’ The Maryland Hotel Company acquired it in 1868, and it remained the city’s leading hotel through the 19th century; delegates to the 1783-1784 Congress were among its guests. The Governor Calvert House, owned by colonial governors Charles and Benedict Calvert, was rebuilt in the Georgian style in 1765 and divided into apartments in the early 1900s. The Robert Johnson House, owned by the Johnson family from 1722 to 1857, was the Maude Apartments until the 1970s.
The ghost story
Historic Hotels of America has named the inns to its Top 25 Most Haunted Historic Hotels list in 2023, 2024 and 2025; the HHA listing does not describe the specific stories.
