The short answer

For the classic, book the Georgian Terrace, the 1911 grand hotel across Peachtree Street from the Fox Theatre. Downtown, the Candler Hotel fills Asa Candler’s 1906 skyscraper, and the Ellis carries the story of the 1946 Winecoff fire. On the east side, Hotel Clermont is a 1924 landmark near the BeltLine. All six are converted early-1900s buildings, and MARTA runs from the airport to downtown in as little as 15 minutes.

The neighborhoods

Where to stay, by area

Downtown

Atlanta’s business district, with nine MARTA rail stations, a streetcar loop, Centennial Olympic Park, the aquarium and the stadium. Three historic hotels are converted early-1900s buildings here: the Candler Hotel and the Ellis on Peachtree Street, and the Glenn on Marietta Street near the park. Rooms and parking get tight during big events like Dragon Con.

Midtown

About a mile north on Peachtree Street, home to the Fox Theatre and Symphony Hall, with four MARTA stations. The Georgian Terrace faces the Fox across Peachtree at Ponce de Leon Avenue, and Hotel Indigo, the former Cox-Carlton, is nearby at 683 Peachtree. Piedmont Park is nearby.

Poncey-Highland

An intown east-side neighborhood with the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail as its western edge. Hotel Clermont is here at 789 Ponce de Leon Avenue, above the Clermont Lounge, which has run in the basement since 1965.

Getting around

MARTA rail runs from Hartsfield-Jackson airport to downtown in as little as 15 minutes for $2.50. Downtown has nine rail stations and Midtown four, and the Atlanta Streetcar loops downtown between the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Centennial Olympic Park.

Parking

Parking at the historic hotels is a paid hotel service: valet is $60 at the Glenn and $47 a night at Hotel Clermont (limited, first-come), and the Georgian Terrace has about 700 self and valet spaces, with rates not published. City street meters went to $3.50 an hour in March 2026. During Dragon Con and other big events, MARTA is easier.

When to go

Spring is pleasant but changeable, fall is drier, and summers are long, hot and humid. The Dogwood Festival fills Piedmont Park in April (April 9 to 11, 2027), the Peachtree Road Race finishes there every July 4, and Dragon Con takes over downtown hotels on Labor Day weekend.

Before you book

Check age rules and taxes: Hotel Clermont requires guests to be 21 to reserve, and the Georgian Terrace requires 18 to check in and lists a 2.89% historic hotel fee on top of sales tax, occupancy tax and Georgia’s $5-a-night hotel fee. Confirm accessible rooms directly with the Candler, Ellis and Hotel Indigo; we could not read their policies.

Questions travelers ask

What is the oldest hotel in Atlanta?

Of the hotels we verified, the Georgian Terrace is the oldest built as a hotel: it opened in October 1911. The oldest building is the 1906 Candler Building, but it has been the Candler Hotel only since 2019. The Ellis opened in 1913 as the Winecoff Hotel.

What is the most haunted hotel in Atlanta?

There is no official ranking. The Ellis has the best-documented backstory: as the Winecoff, it was the scene of a 1946 fire that killed 119 people, and local TV has reported guests saying they smell smoke and hear alarms. We report these as stories, not fact.

Is it better to stay downtown or in Midtown?

Atlanta has no single historic core, so pick by plan. Downtown puts you by Centennial Olympic Park, the aquarium, the stadium and the convention center. Midtown puts you across from the Fox Theatre and near Piedmont Park. Hotel Clermont suits a stay built around the BeltLine.

Where do you park at Atlanta’s historic hotels?

At the hotel, for a fee: valet is $60 at the Glenn and $47 a night at Hotel Clermont, and the Georgian Terrace has about 700 on-site spaces. Many visitors skip the car, since MARTA rail reaches downtown from the airport in as little as 15 minutes.

Are there historic bed and breakfasts in Atlanta?

A few, in Victorian houses outside downtown, but none is verified for this guide yet. Atlanta’s verified historic stays are all hotels.
