8 historic places to stay · verified October 2026 · by Historic Inns editors

The short answer

Stay in Old Town: all eight verified historic inns are there, and it’s the easiest part of Key West to explore without a car. For a central hotel, book La Concha, the 1926 landmark at Duval and Fleming Streets. For the oldest, Island City House, an 1880 house that has taken guests since 1912. For a beach, the Casa Marina, the Flagler-era resort on the Atlantic. Where inns charge for parking, expect $40 to $55 a day.

Where to stay, by area

Upper Duval and the Historic Seaport

The Gulf end of Old Town, where Duval Street runs up to Mallory Square and the Key West Bight, once home to the shrimping fleet and now lined with seafood restaurants, bars and shops. The Key West Express ferry docks at the Seaport. La Concha, on Duval at Fleming Street, and the Curry Mansion Inn on Caroline Street are the historic stays here.

Old Town side streets

The residential grid of 19th-century frame houses just off Duval, inside the original Key West Historic District. Most of the island’s historic guest houses are here: The Marquesa and Marrero’s Guest Mansion on Fleming Street, Island City House on William Street and the Artist House on Eaton Street. Many blocks have resident-only parking, so plan to park once and walk.

Lower Duval and the Southernmost Point

The Atlantic end of Duval Street, near the Southernmost Point buoy and the Hemingway Home. The Southernmost House stands here at 1400 Duval; its National Register nomination calls it perhaps the best Queen Anne house in Key West.

Casa Marina and the Atlantic shore

A residential stretch of the south shore anchored by the Casa Marina, which opened on New Year’s Eve 1920 and was added to the historic district in 1983. Higgs Beach and the White Street Pier are nearby. It’s the historic hotel with its own beach.

Planning your stay

Getting around

Old Town is small and walkable. The free Duval Loop bus was suspended in January 2026 and replaced by Key West Rides, an app-based shuttle that costs $2 a person; pedicabs, taxis, rideshare and bikes fill the gaps. Key West International Airport (EYW) has direct flights, and the Key West Express ferry from southwest Florida docks at the Historic Seaport.

Parking

Parking is the main hassle of an Old Town stay. The city’s Old Town Garage at 301 Grinnell Street charges $6 an hour or $48 a day plus tax, and street spaces marked resident-only are enforced. La Concha charges $45 to self-park or $55 for valet, the Marquesa and the Southernmost House $40 a day; Island City House and the Artist House have no lots.

When to go

Winter and spring are busiest, with November to April highs around 75°F. June to October is hotter and usually quieter and cheaper, but hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and visitors must leave first when an evacuation is ordered. Hemingway Days fills town in late July, and Fantasy Fest takes over Old Town for ten days each October (October 22 to 31 in 2027).

Accessibility

Most historic guest houses are wooden houses without elevators. Island City House will try to assign a ground-floor room, and the Southernmost House has ground-floor rooms and an accessible suite. La Concha, a seven-story hotel, has accessible rooms with roll-in showers.

Before you book

Check fees and age rules: the Casa Marina adds a $60-a-day resort fee, the Marquesa a $50-a-day amenity fee and the Southernmost House a $30-a-night resort fee. The Southernmost House and Marrero’s are 21 and over, and the Marquesa takes guests over 14 only. The Marquesa asks a 50% deposit for Fantasy Fest, the powerboat races and the holidays.

Questions travelers ask

What is the oldest hotel or inn in Key West?

Island City House bills itself as the island’s oldest operating guest house: its main house was built in 1880 and became a hotel in 1912. Of the buildings put up as hotels, the Casa Marina, opened on New Year’s Eve 1920, is the oldest we verified, followed by La Concha in 1926.

What is the most haunted hotel in Key West?

There is no official ranking. Marrero’s Guest Mansion calls itself Key West’s most haunted hotel and tells the story of Enriquetta Marrero, who it says vowed to stay in the house. Ghost tours stop at La Concha, and the Artist House, the original home of Robert the Doll, tells its own story. We report these as stories, not fact.

Is it better to stay in Old Town?

For most visitors, yes. Old Town holds the main sights, the restaurants and all eight verified historic inns. Upper Duval and the Seaport put you among the bars; the side streets are quieter; the Casa Marina is the one with its own beach.

Where do you park at a historic inn in Key West?

It depends on the inn. La Concha ($45 self-park, $55 valet), the Marquesa ($40 a day) and the Southernmost House ($40 a day) have paid parking. The small guest houses rely on side streets (avoid spaces marked resident-only) or the city’s Old Town Garage at $6 an hour or $48 a day.

Are there historic bed and breakfasts in Key West?

Yes. Many Old Town guest houses are 19th-century frame houses inside the historic district, including Island City House (1880), Marrero’s Guest Mansion (1890) and the Artist House, a Queen Anne house from the 1890s.
