Salt Lake City, Utah
Historic Hotels & Inns in Salt Lake City
Five historic hotels and inns in Utah’s capital: two downtown hotels, one built as a hotel in 1910 and one in a 1920s bank, and three mansion inns from 1889 to 1906 on South Temple, in the Avenues and on Capitol Hill.
The short answer
Stay downtown for transit: the Kimpton Hotel Monaco fills the 1923–24 Continental Bank Building at Main Street and 200 South, and The Peery, built as a hotel in 1910 and now part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, is at West Temple and 300 South; both are inside UTA’s Free Fare Zone, and TRAX’s Green Line runs from the airport into downtown. For a B&B, Inn on the Hill is Dr. Edward D. Woodruff’s 1906 mansion on Capitol Hill, with breakfast and free parking, and the Ellerbeck Mansion is an 1892 house in the Avenues with seven suites. The oldest building is the 1889 Kahn Mansion on South Temple, home to The Anniversary Inn’s adults-only themed suites. The Peery is the one with ghost lore, a story about an elevator spirit called ‘Moaning Molly.’ In 2027, book early for April 5 to October 1, when the Salt Lake Temple open house expects about 22,000 visitors a day.

Where to stay, by area
Downtown and Temple Square
Salt Lake’s street numbering starts at the southeast corner of Temple Square, and downtown blocks are 660 feet square with 132-foot streets, so even a few blocks is a real walk. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco, in the 1923–24 Continental Bank Building at Main Street and 200 South, and The Peery, built as a hotel in 1910 at West Temple and 300 South, are both inside UTA’s Free Fare Zone, where TRAX and bus rides that start and end in the zone are free. Temple Square’s grounds stay open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily during the temple’s renovation, and the Gallivan Center and the Delta Center each have a TRAX station.
Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill rises north of downtown below the Utah State Capitol, Richard K.A. Kletting’s Neoclassical building of 1912–16, which runs guided tours on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. Inn on the Hill, Dr. Edward D. Woodruff’s 1906 mansion at 225 North State Street, is in the National Register historic district, with free off-street parking and upper rooms looking over downtown. City Creek Canyon opens above Memory Grove.
The Avenues
Northeast of downtown on the lower slopes of the Wasatch, the Avenues broke from the city’s ten-acre blocks: the blocks are smaller, the numbered avenues run east-west and the lettered streets climb the hill, steeply in places. The Avenues Historic District is mostly late-19th- and early-20th-century houses with little commerce. The Ellerbeck Mansion at 140 B Street, built in 1892 for Henrietta Dyer Ellerbeck, has a first-come lot behind the inn and free street parking.
South Temple
South Temple runs east from Temple Square as Salt Lake’s mansion row, a 119-acre historic district with the Kearns Mansion (now the Governor’s Mansion), the Cathedral of the Madeleine, the Masonic Temple and the Alta Club. The Anniversary Inn – Salt Lake South Temple is in the 1889 Queen Anne Kahn Mansion, built for grocer Emanuel Kahn; it has 13 themed, adults-only suites, so ask whether yours is in the mansion itself. It sits about seven blocks east of Main Street, outside the Free Fare Zone.

Getting around
TRAX’s Green Line runs from the Airport station, just outside the terminal, to City Center in about 20 minutes, every 15 minutes Monday through Saturday, for $2.50 one way or $5 for a day pass. Rides that start and end in UTA’s Free Fare Zone are free; it covers roughly North Temple to 500 South and 400 West to 200 East, with extensions up to the State Capitol and out to Salt Lake Central, but FrontRunner commuter rail isn’t free there. For skiing, Visit Salt Lake puts Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton about 40 minutes from the airport by car, and UTA’s ski buses ($5 one way) typically run from late November or early December into late March or April.
Parking
Downtown street parking is $3.50 an hour at city pay stations, enforced Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a two-hour limit until 6 p.m. and four hours after; Sundays are free. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco charges $47 a night for valet, parked in an off-site garage. The hill B&Bs park free: Inn on the Hill has off-street parking, and the Ellerbeck has a first-come lot (tight for large vehicles) plus free street parking. Parking at The Peery and the Anniversary Inn wasn’t confirmed, so ask, and expect limited downtown parking during the 2027 temple open house.
When to go
Winter is ski season, and the Utah Jazz and Utah Mammoth play home games at the Delta Center from late October 2026. Sundance no longer fills January: Utah’s final festival opened January 22, 2026, and the 2027 edition runs in Boulder, Colorado. Summer brings Pioneer Day on July 24, a state holiday with the Days of ’47 Parade downtown, and the Utah Arts Festival in June (its 2027 dates hadn’t been confirmed by late October). Temple Square’s Christmas lights ran through the renovation in 2025, but 2026 dates hadn’t been announced by late October.
Accessibility
UTA’s low-floor TRAX trains have two ramp doors per train, and the Kimpton Hotel Monaco lists ADA-compliant elevators, five accessible rooms and accessible self-parking. The hill B&Bs take more effort: the Avenues are steep in places, the Ellerbeck’s suites are on its first and second floors (plus a ground-floor apartment with a private entrance) with no elevator mentioned, and Inn on the Hill has one ADA room by the front door with a walk-in shower. The Anniversary Inn says accessibility varies by suite and asks guests to call; The Peery’s wasn’t confirmed, so ask.
Before you book
Book early for April 5 to October 1, 2027, when the Salt Lake Temple open house expects about 22,000 visitors a day; the tour is free but needs timed-entry tickets, which Temple Square advises booking at least two weeks ahead. From March 2027, sections of North Temple, South Temple and West Temple around Temple Square close, and the Church is steering visitors to TRAX and a free shuttle from a lot near North Temple and Redwood Road; partial demolition of the Salt Palace could start as early as February 2027. The B&Bs set their own terms: the Ellerbeck refunds until 72 hours before check-in and takes no children under 12, and the Anniversary Inn is adults-only, with cancellation terms set by the rate booked.

Questions travelers ask
What is the oldest hotel in Salt Lake City?
Of the five stays we list, the oldest building is the Kahn Mansion, an 1889 Queen Anne house built for grocer Emanuel Kahn that now holds The Anniversary Inn – Salt Lake South Temple; the Ellerbeck Mansion in the Avenues followed in 1892. The oldest building put up as a hotel is The Peery (1910, by Charles B. Onderdonk), while the Kimpton Hotel Monaco fills the 1923–24 Continental Bank Building and has been a hotel only since 1999.
What is the most haunted hotel in Salt Lake City?
There’s no official ranking. The Peery is the only one of the five with published ghost lore: in 2012 a hotel spokesman told Fox 13 that a ghost called ‘Moaning Molly’ lives in its elevator and that many guests have had experiences riding it. We report it as a story, not fact, and found no published lore for the other four.
Should I stay downtown or in the Avenues or Capitol Hill?
Downtown is the practical pick: the Kimpton Hotel Monaco and The Peery are inside UTA’s Free Fare Zone, TRAX runs from the airport to the Temple Square, City Center and Gallivan Plaza stations, and the Salt Palace and Delta Center are close, though parking costs (the Monaco’s valet is $47 a night). Capitol Hill (Inn on the Hill) and the Avenues (the Ellerbeck Mansion) are quiet residential historic districts with free B&B parking, but the streets climb and the Avenues are outside the Free Fare Zone. The Kahn Mansion on South Temple sits in between, on the mansion row east of downtown.
Where do you park in downtown Salt Lake City?
City pay stations charge $3.50 an hour, enforced Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with two- and four-hour limits, and Sundays are free. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco’s valet is $47 a night, Inn on the Hill and the Ellerbeck park guests free, and parking at The Peery and the Anniversary Inn wasn’t confirmed, so ask when you book.
Does Salt Lake City have historic bed and breakfasts?
Yes, three of the five stays: Inn on the Hill, the 1906 Woodruff mansion on Capitol Hill, with breakfast and off-street parking included; the Ellerbeck Mansion, an 1892 Avenues house with seven suites, breakfast for two and no children under 12; and The Anniversary Inn’s 1889 Kahn Mansion on South Temple, with 13 themed, adults-only suites and breakfast delivered to the suite (ask whether yours is in the mansion).
