The story

The five-storey brick and stone building at the corner of Drayton and East Bay streets was the American Trust and Bank, later called the American Building, and was most recently an office building. The City of Savannah dates it to 1915 and treats it as a contributing building in the NHL district; Wikipedia’s district list and the Commons photo record an 1860 original configuration that was altered and enlarged in 1895 and 1915. The building sat vacant for years: a previous owner removed the windows without approval in 2016. In 2018 the new owner, 7 Drayton Hotel LLC, won a variance for double-pane wood windows on floors 2-5 and kept about 65% of the original wood window frames. After about three years of renovation the hotel opened in late 2019, and it joined Hilton’s Curio Collection on 1 August 2023.
