The story

Engineers from Stone & Webster built the Riverside power station on the Savannah River in 1912, and it supplied the city’s electricity for more than 90 years, with expansions through the 1950s, before it was decommissioned in 2005. The Kessler Collection acquired the plant, broke ground on the $270 million Plant Riverside District in December 2016, and opened the hotel and district on July 29, 2020. The restored Power Plant building keeps its 176-foot smokestacks and houses guest rooms, a Generator Hall with a dinosaur and fossil exhibit, and restaurants. The redevelopment received a Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation award for Excellence in Rehabilitation and a Historic Savannah Foundation preservation award.
