The story
The Nichols House was built in 1884 for William Nichols, a Savannah printer and the eldest son of George Nichols, the city’s head printer during the Civil War, which gives the inn its name. The inn says the house was for a time owned by Nat King Cole and later served as a community center for underprivileged youth; the HABS survey photographed it as the Wesley Community Center. Owners Peter and Kristen bought the property in June 2015 and restored the house as the Printmaker’s Inn. On the adjoining lot they re-erected the Hills-Galloway House, a c.1693 First Period/Georgian house dismantled in East Hartford, Connecticut, from 2018 and reassembled in Savannah from March 2020.
