The story

Lydia Leister, a widow with six children, bought a nine-acre farm with a small log house on the Taneytown Road in 1861, and in July 1863 Union commander George Meade chose her house as his headquarters. The family added a large two-story section in 1874; when Lydia sold the farm to the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association in 1888, she moved that 1874 section to a lot near the Dobbin House (now 71 Steinwehr Avenue), built a rear addition and lived there until her death in 1893. Almost a century later the house became part of the Gettystown Inn, and a 1998 renovation restored the layout it had when it adjoined Meade’s headquarters. Breakfast is served next door in the stone Dobbin House, built in 1776 by Rev. Alexander Dobbin as his home and classical school and used as a hospital after the battle.

The ghost story

Ghost-tour lore holds that guests in the Lee Suite and the Reynolds Room, both in the inn's Leister House, often sense the presence of a fallen Union soldier.
