The story
Attorney Willis F. McCook, counsel to Henry Clay Frick and captain of Yale’s first football team, built a 20,000-square-foot mansion on Fifth Avenue for his family of ten children, finished in 1906, plus a smaller house next door for his daughter. Carpenter & Crocker designed both in Elizabethan and Tudor Revival styles, with ironwork by Cyril Colnik and Rookwood tile, at a cost of $300,000. Preservationists Mary Del Brady and Richard Pearson bought the fire-damaged houses for $1.5 million and restored them, opening the Fifth Avenue House as a hotel in early 2011 and the Amberson House in November 2012. Priory Hospitality Group took over operations in 2016.
