The story
John McFarlane built the original stone house in 1810 and the brick structure followed in 1833. During the battle in July 1863, Confederate sharpshooters occupied the garret, and the inn says one is believed to have fired the shot that killed Jennie Wade, the battle’s only civilian casualty; more than 100 bullet holes still mark the south wall. The house then served as a field hospital, and it is named for Brig. Gen. Elon J. Farnsworth, killed leading a cavalry charge on July 3. Loring and Jean Shultz bought it in 1972 and turned it into an inn, restaurant and ghost-tour stop.
The ghost story
The inn bills itself as one of America's most haunted inns and says many guests and staff have reported unexplained experiences; a room is named for 'Jeremy,' a child spirit said to live in the house, and guests leave coins by a casket in the cellar in his memory. It runs its own ghost tours and paranormal investigations and cites a USA Today ranking of #4 Best Haunted Hotel (the inn's claim).
